You've answered your own question Alan image

It's probably a clay soil if it's hard in dry conditions and soggy in wet ones. You can get hollow time aerators which remove a long plug of soil, leaving a nice 'tube' to brush grit or coarse sand into. That might be better than just a fork. There are also electric scarifiers which sometimes do a similar job by opening up the surface of the soil, but you may not want to spend money on something like that.

If you already have a decent fork and strong arms, that's probably your best bet just now! It's one of those jobs that need doing regularly to gradually improve the drainage.

    Many thanks

I'm looking at aerators in Homebase.

the roller one which might not penetrate a hard surface, or the tubular one which you would use like a fork.

whats your thoughts on these please ?

ill get a few bags of rhs sand in home base to fill holes left after aeration.

    any other tips most welcome.....

I have forked in the meantime.

Then spread enriched compost with seed aswell.

Hopefully I'll pick up hollow time aerator and redo again.

    Thoughts anyone ?

It's South facing and a nice sun trap in summer.....if weather is decent.
