Depth of top soil for new turf

Morning all....

Some of you may recall that I posted a number of months ago asking for help in putting in a new garden. Well I'm at the final hurdle before turfing and I'm slightly lost about how deep the topsoil should be.

I've read at least 6 inches for optimum growth which is a heck of a lot of soil for the garden, probably have to get in another 3-5 builders bags and I've read a couple of inches so what do you guys think?

The top soil will be going down on a good layer of sharp sanding a never-ending layer of clay below.

Any help is appreciated.

I think it has to be more than 6 inches. At least 10 inches and you will need to tread over it a few times and then rake and repeat. It's very easy just to pour top-soil in and think that is the right height. All air pockets need to be removed, otherwise you can end up with an uneven lawn later.

Thanks very much for you reply Borderline. There is a couple of inches of sharp sand underneath so I was hoping to possibly cut a corner and have say 4 inches of top soil + the sharp sand will give me 6 inches! I just want this finished now, it's driving me crazy!

ps may I add that in the picture for avoidance of doubt the top soil has been dumped, not spread as yet image

Happyhibs62, with hanging baskets as neatly spaced as that, no one can assume you are the sloppy type! Sounds like you know your top-soil and sand creates the desired height. It's time for finishing it...

  • It's all systems go then! Well when I say all systems I'll level it out, heel it then let it settle over a few weeks before turfing.

Never done this before....but hey, what can go wrong??!
