Bulking up cuttings

you can always find out how to propagate by cuttings, but how do you get those cuttings into a bulky healthy plant? Silly question I know.

I tried cuttings for the first time last year with aster Monch and I was so pleased they survived I just planted them out but they are leggy and I'm wondering if I should have pinched them out when they started growing as a cutting. Although i wasn't wanting to as it seemed a shame to cut off the new growth.

I've also found there are lots of little shoots at the base of the cutting coming up under the soil but they don't seem to survive, so wondering what I can do about those, or what I am doing wrong

could really do with more info out there on what you do with cuttings, seedlings, etc once they have got past the initial bit of growth.  Seems to be a gap in info there

thanks for any advice you can share.

Cuttings can be a tricky business. Not all plants can be grown in exact same way when young. Some plants need pinching out when young, others flesh out quite quickly. Others need heat and dampness to root whilst another just root without extra care.

You will need to re-pot them once they've developed roots. Keep in a cool place without too much harsh sun. Do not plant out until the young cuttings have developed beyond the smallest plug size. This does not apply to all plants, quite a few still need re-poting again till they are big and strong enough to be grown out into the ground. I have not dealt with Asters, so can't comment, so hopefully someone can offer tips. But it does sound like they needed to be pinched early on.
