Small tree for poor soil

Hi - We've just moved into our new house. The east side of the garden (which was a former orchard) is elevated above the roadway of the houses next door. The soil of this bank appears to be very poor with a lot of builders rubble etc thrown in. We need a small tree to give us a bit more privacy, but it doesn't need to be evergreen. I think that the soil is pretty neutral.

Silver Birches (Betula sp.) are a colonising genus of trees ; they flourish in heathlands and bleak northerly moorlands . Soil pH doesn't appear to be an issue , as long as it's not chalky .

Betula jaquemontii is a stunning white-barked species , but there are many others of equal merit .

  • Hi Pansyface - Yes that was certainly on my list and if it's not fussy re soil quality then I think we might give it a go.
