Transplanting Grapes

Hi,
I came across a vineyard being pulled out and grabbed some vines, they were ripped out by a digger and only have about a foot of roots attached, do you think they'll survive if I prune them, fertilise and keep them watered?

It's almost spring here we are zone 9A.

I will also take cuttings to guarantee I get some growing. It was so sad to see acres of these vines getting pulled out, I will go back and try to dig some out before they pull them out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks heaps :)

Why were they being ripped out?  Are they diseased?  Are they not producing well for some reason?

Farmers don't often rip out a productive plant.

I think cuttings would be a better bet ... those are large vines to transplant at this time of year with a dry summer ahead, but check first that they're not diseased.

  • Thank you Dovefromabove. Thankfully the vines are fine, they are keeping a couple of acres, they are just ripping them out to make more land for dairy farming. Which seems insane to me! But it's their land I guess, and all the better for me :) I will certainly give cuttings a go.

I would go for hardwood cuttings. Take pencil thick cuttings about 30 to 40 cm long and push in the earth in a slit trench where you want them to grow.  Water them regularly for the first year.

I would plant them up, our local garden center sell these in pots for £100 a plant
