Hi Buzzy. The one drawback is that the planter hasn't any great depth to it so an Alpine type garden would be your best bet. There are lots of little Alpines that can give interest all year around. Sempervivums, Saxifrages, Alpine toadflax for starters.

Dianthus would do well there Buzzy, and you can make the medium fit perfectly for them when it's a container. Evergreen and good scent too  image

Little pasqueflowers (Pulsatilla) would also be nice with small spring bulbs.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

A heuchera or two would also give some year-round colour. image

I cannot grow dianthus at all. I dont know what I do but I have given up.

I have two lovely  Antirrhinum  (snapdragon) plants,( my garden rescue)  again. They are really lovely.

If you want a quick fix try them . Try growing Antirrhinums in your pots. Very good perfomers .

I cut them back hard and they are flowering again. They were so much part of what my Dad grew in his garden.

Are we all becoming too sophisticated about our choice of plants and missing the cheap and cheerful.

(At least they are not those horrible little border orange and yellow  marigolds along with those wretched small begonias.)

When I moved to this house there were tiny dianthus in a huuuuge planter outside the back door. The smell was glorious. I have split them, moved them, ignored them and they've forgiven me every time. This week I took a hammer to the aforementioned planter and my dianthus are now chopped back in pots and I hope they will forgive me one more time as I move them into more attractive and manageable large pots. They seem to like dry, used up, neglected compost full of weeds and stones. image

I also have heuchera in planters and pots and they are great for year round colour but the vine weevil have a field day so buy some Provado at the same time. image

Stick a few bulbs in too. They're always a nice surprise. And maybe a couple of wee traily things. Ivy isn't the most exciting but it gives a bit of movement. I have nice variegated ones.
