Sweetcorn

Am growing sweetcorn for the first time. Have planted four together (no more as lack of space) they are three foot tall good colour looking healthy and starting to produce male flowers on top, but no female tassels on stems at all!  Is it a right off this year now and Any ideas as to what to change next year. Thanks.

Have patience ... they will appear before very long ... the male flowers always appear first image

You will start to get yellow tassels when they are ready. Dont harvest until those tassels go brown and look dead (tassels not the plant). Enjoy, they will be delicious. Can't wait for mine to finish ripening!

Sweetcorn grows well in containers for those that dont have a large spaceimage

Well I'll try to be patient, but it's hard to wait. As the garden has been very productive  (only my second year with a greenhouse), waiting for outside plants is exciting.  Lol.

There's a very important gardening skill you could be learning while you wait

And if it's any consolation, this rain will be good for them 'cos they're thirsty plants ...'

Interestingly, each tassle leads to an individual kernel on the cob, so every tassle needs fertilising by a separate grain of pollen.  That's why it's so important to grow them in a block.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Just watch out for the earwigs. They like a good nibble on the tassles. My mum's crop was devastated by them.

Ok thanks everyone. I suppose even the rain has a silver lining. ? unfortunately my comfy rocking chair in the garden sits looking strait at the sweetcorn! Lol. But at least last night I picked 20 Tom's and 4 cucumbers to keep me going.?
