Black plants and soil
Hi! I have several plants in my perennial garden that have turned black and died. They pull out of the ground easily. The soil underneath them is also black and a bit mushy. The plants that have died are not immediately adjacent. I am very worried that this will spread through my whole garden . I would appreciate any ideas of what this could be and what I can do to stop it from spreading. Thank you!!!

Sounds like the ground is waterlogged and boggy. Very few plants will grow in that - apart from bog plants of course.

I had a similar problem this year.
I grew 36 agastache and they done really well, then I noticed the leaves drooping on a few as if they needed water, but they just died. I could see that the stems of the plant just above the soil were black and dead.
