Plant eaten

I have just planted a gaillardia and the next day it looks as if something has eaten all the stems

any ideas on what would have eaten this

there are no stems left on the plant

there are no slug or snail trails anywhere

im at a loss please help

    Are you rural? Could be rabbits/deer etc. 

    Birds are another possibility, but very few things eat the entire plant at one go.

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    no deer or rabbits here

  • I put some cayenne pepperimage down just in case its squirrels

    Slugs and snails will eat plants to the ground, but I was assuming it was a fair size of plant. They tend to go for smaller, younger specimens, but are capable of eating a vast amount at one go. image

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Like Fairygrl, I think its is indeed slugs or smails and, contrary to popular belief, they don't always leave visible trails.

    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Ah - the picture wasn't there when I posted again. Looks like slug damage to me.
