Green tomatoes

i am growing some "heirloom" tomatoes this year.

amongst others, Brad's Blackheart, Black Trifele, Green Sausage and Green Velvet.

the first two are beautiful, ripe and tasty. My question is, how do I know when to pick green velvet and green sausage. If they are meant to be green they will, I suppose,  stay green. Sorry for what will probably seem a very stupid question, but this is my first attempt at vegetables - I normally grow flowers!!!!

When they come away easily at the first joint behind the fruit.  Sounds silly, but they will just look ready!

As you have a good number, trial and error is a good method.  Pick one and try it.

  • Thank you!

i shall try one first thing in the morning!

  • You will soon discover that ripe green is (usually) different to the unripe green and the ripest tomatoes will feel a little softer or squashier too.
