Green cherry tomato

Good morning all. Could anyone advise me whether it is worth cutting off the flowers that haven't yet  made fruit from my chrry tomato bushes? So far I have quite a lot of green tomatoes but none have yet turned red and with the weather the way it is I am wondering if they ever will. If I cut off all the ones that won't set and ripen before the end of the season will the plants put their effort in ripening the ones left. If not, is there anything I can (except supply the sun of course!!). Thanks all.

I've topped my outdoor tomatoes now ... so they concentrate on the trusses that are already formed ... but I wouldn't remove any flowers.

There's loads of time for your tomatoes  to ripen ... they'll carry on until the first frosts.  Patience image

  • Thanks Dove I will try to be patient lol.  This year it seems that none of my veggies have grown very well and I know that we haven't had a brilliant summer so far but it does get me down image - I will have to persuade the OH that I really do need a greenhouse when he retires next year.... before he gets his new garage !!

Maybe a garage with a leanto greenhouse on the side?  image

Dove is right, of course, there's quite a bit of time but it does depend on where you live as to how much potential ripening time is left. I'm on the (sometimes) sunny south coast so not at all concerned but my sister in Mid Wales has a shorter season and wants hers to get on with it!

  • What a good idea Dove, that way i can keep my eye on him too image.  I'm in the midlands FloBear so we don't get quite the amount of sunshine as you do, but will cross my fingers that the sun will make a reappearance before December!!

A liquid feed with high potash tomato feed may help as well if you are not already doing so.

I always take off the flowers on or about the 1st August and the fruit that won't make it on September 1st.

I think green tomato chutney is the food of the Devil so I don't encourage it.

  • Give them time! :-)

I live in the north east, grow tomatoes in a green house and find it has to be an exceptionally fine summer if I see many ripe tomatoes before September and we have only just started August.

Start saving up for that greenhouse!
