Not a pest !!!!... you're a very lucky person!!!  image

That is the caterpillar of the beautiful Elephant Hawk Moth ... it's on the ground looking for a place where it can pupate and become an adult, reappearing next year.

Just leave it alone to get on with things and it'll be fine image

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

NO!   Please don't do that!  The caterpillar is on the ground because it is ready to pupate and is looking for a place with the right conditions. It knows what it needs.

It does not need to be in a jam jar! image

Good practice is to leave wildlife alone if it is healthy and not in danger.
