Droopy amaryllis leaves

A couple of weeks ago, I started watering my amaryllis after leaving it in the airing cupboard since Xmas. It quickly started growing leaves (about half a dozen) which are now over a foot tall. They look healthy but can't stay upright. Have I done something wrong? Also I thought the flowers came first or am I wrong?

Thanks for any replies.

The airing cupboard is a new one on me, forget-me-not. I find that the best way is to let the leaves die down naturally and then leave the bulb, in its pot, in a cool, dry place. it will become dormant and rest for a while. As soon as it begins to show growth I water it and bring it into a bit more light. You can repot at this stage, too. Then it comes into the house to flower. It is not natural to flower in winter and you will find they quickly go back to flowering as nature intended.

  • Thanks for your reply Posy. I read about using the airing cupboard some years ago. Can't remember where. The leaves did die down naturally but are now growing again. The leaves seem to have perked up a bit. Just wondering if I maybe I've under-watered and that caused the leaves to droop. Last year, they grew to about 3 feet and fell flat. I didn't get a flower at all. Fingers crossed for this year.

  • Me again. Just been to check on my amaryllis and one of them has a flower bud. Don't they grow quickly. Didn't notice it a couple of days ago. It also has 2 'babies'. Should I take these off now or wait till after it has flowered?

I would be inclined to leave the babies until it dies down again and you pot it up. Well done on the flowers!

  • Thank you Posy.
