I have planded an olive tree in a pot using john.inns no 2 based on garden centre advise have I used to right compost or should it have been no 3?

That should be fine. JI2 has less nutrients than JI3 and you don't really want lots of nutes for your olive or you'll likely get some straggly growth.
I would have added about 20% grit too, but a bit late now.
Mine's been in JI2 for about 10 yrs or more now - I'm afraid I don't generally take very good care of it, but it doing fine.
