Good morning all.

I THINK it's normally the case of if you eat it and it's sweet it's an eating Apple, if it's sour it's a cooking Apple.
Eating apples you can cook with anyway you just won't need to use as much sugar , so surely a good thing.
It looks a lot like a James Grieve. I eat them raw and cook and freeze a lot for winter puddings. I do not add any sugar at all. A good all round apple. They also keep in a cold place until around January. RHS gardens will have Apple identification days soon. Check out the RHS website for one near you.
I thought James Grieve too - we had a big JG tree when I was a kid. Lovely apples.
You can cook with any apples. Bramley is often suggested as it dissolves into a pulp when cooked which is not what you always want. I'm not really keen on Bramley except for apple sauce.
I have a Katy apple. Just now the apples look ready, but they're still a little tart, so perfect for pies and crumbles and they don't go to a pulp either when cooked.
In about 10-14 days they'll be fully ripe and very juicy - perfect for eating, but still fine for pies and crumbles, and you don't need to add much sugar either when cooking. I'll try and ram some in the freezer along with all the other veg too.

Cook with them and see how they turn out ... some hold their shape, some soften to a fluff ... you'll soon get to know how they react and whether they're best as a purée, or a pie or tart. I often roast Coxes around a joint of roast pork ... just try and see how they turn out

In, probably, October take three apples and a small branch with leaves to an Apple Day. They are held all over the country. There will be someone there who will identify your apple.
Thanks all.
