Repairing cut power cable for hedgetrimmer

Hi all.

I am trying to repair a hedgetrimmer which has a cut power cable. I have read that there are a few ways to go about this such as using block connectors, refitting the old cable back to the appliance (if the cable left attached to the appliance is a shorter length) or stripping the cable back and attaching the wires using electrical insulation tape (which seems to be the least safest method).

I prefer to go with the second method of refitting the old cut cable back to the appliance so that the cable is continuous. I would like some advice of how to go about this please. I have managed to open up the hedgetrimmer but I am not sure as to whether I will have to keep the gold bit of the end of the blue and brown wires in the pictures attached. Would it be safe to strip back the longer cable at the end (the blue and brown wires) which is going to be reattached and fit it straight into the white piece and screw them down like before. Or would that gold bit at the end be required? This is the first time I am attempting a repair like this so would be very thankful for any help  and advice I can get.imageimage

The crimp is not completely necessary but will ensure a 'good' connection when the screw is wound down tight. You can buy crimps and crimping tools from most DIY stores or online for that matter of course.

You don't have to keep the gold bit on the end, you could just strip the wire back then twist the wires and put into the connector block - absolutely nothing wrong with that.
I'm hoping that you use an RCD with the trimmer.
Mike's suggestion that the wires within the cable will be degraded is unlikely - that's part of the reason we use fuses. If the cable is not up to the rating of the machinery and/or you've got the wrong fuse, then the wires within the cable could well become damaged.
If you're using an RCD the wires within the cable will not have been degraded.
