It was approx 25 MM long and 10mm diameter
It is a hoverfly, Volucella inanis, which mimics hornets.

Surely this is Volucella zonaria, with broad black bars on the underside of abdomen and more of a reddish chestnut colour on the front upper part of the abdomen (yellow in V. inanis).
I think you are correct.
