What happened to my blackberry?

I have had a blackberry for at least 10 years , this year it started to shoot as usual then nothing and the shoots died. The plant appears to still be alive because it is growing these clusters of very tiny shoots that never get much bigger than shown in the picture- any ideas?

I cant see a picture but it sounds like weedkiller damage.

I agree with Fidget; not normal growth and looks like herbicide damage.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

I can't think of anything else that would do that. Have you (or a neighbour) been spraying on a windy day?

  • I rarely use weedkiller, and only on the paving usually, unfortunately the plant is on an adjoining fence with my neighbour, I hope she didn't do anything on purpose but her husband did once proudly tell me how he had poisoned another neighbour's rose because it dared to get greenfly. No way to know so I will have just take the loss, thanks for your response
