Found these on a walk. Can anybody identify them? Wondering if they're edible.

Looks a bit like a walnut ... but they usually have a raised rim around the edges of the two halves... crack it open and let's have a look inside ...

Was it on a tree or on the ground ... any chance of a photo of the tree leaves?

Ah, right, the second photo just appeared ... did you find it on the ground?  I think it might be an old walnut from a previous year ......... or a diseased one from this year.  It's hard to tell without handling it.  It could even be some sort of gall or oak apple or similar.

  • I think it's an oak gall! The hole in the centre is where the larva would have residedimage

Commonly known as an Oak Apple because when they first appear they are often bright red like an apple. They are the Oaks response to an attack by a Gall Wasp. Not edible, but were once used to make ink.
