Plants around bamboo

I am growing increasingly frustrated with the plants I am growing in the ground around a tall bamboo plant I have. it's turning into a graveyard! Can anyone recommend some hardy plants that should survive the drier soil? I've tried alpine plants and rockery plants with mixed success.
