What is this dratted thing?!

please can someone help me identify this weed and tell me how to kill it without killing my roses? I've dug the whole thing out several times but it's rhizomes are pesky and it keeps coming back!! I'm not above chemical warfare in this battle.

    Has someone in the past by any chance grown Acanthus spinosus there ? Looks pretty similar to me ; in the right place a good garden plant ; wrong place = plenty of patience to dig out all the thick roots .

    Is Acanthus Mollis similarly thuggish, as I've planted one in my garden?

    They both seem to be OK until you dig around them or divide the roots . Apparently nurseries propagate Acanthus by root-cuttings .

    Incidentally , one I would love to obtain is A.syriacus  !

    I have an acanthus but have put it in a big pot after reading about it on here. ;-)
