Gaps at bottom of shrubs

At the bottom of my garden there are shrubs which look ok however, very patchy at the bottom and very frustrating looking at the unsightly mess.
In a perfect place I'd love to take them out and put in a different type, such as bux style, which to me look very attractive and smart once pruned.
