We have had a good crop of gooseberries, still a lot ripening. The bushes are growing through the nets, can they be "topped"? Difficult to remove the nets due to this growth.

Yes, I think you'll be fine. I usually prune the new growth back to about three inches in the summer. This stops the bushes getting too leggy.
