cape goosberry

Every year I have self seeded Cape Gooseberries in the garden.

They no longer have edible fruit, the fruits are just full of seeds with no moisture.

Any ideas.

We don't pull them out because the flowers are so beautiful.

I don't know specifically re these but culinary varieties are selected from the best fruiting species, which are cross pollinated, hybridised etc to make something worth eating.

Yours may have seeded back to something close to a wild form over the years.

Just a theory, extrapolating from other species.image

Sounds likely to me, nut. image

Chinese lanterns have insignificant white flowers as well Philippa. Those orange things are inflated calyces containing the seed

  • these are definitely Physalis(Cape Gooseberries), self seeded from an original purchased plant.

In the first year I had a massive crop of succulent berries , which I know and love.

looks like I will just have to buy new plants each year.

I kept Physalis for the seed heads. They are an artwork when dried. As for the fruit - could eat them all day.
