Bird of Paradise

Hi!

My step daughter wanted a Bird of Paradise. I bought her artificial light to go with it, but she never used it. The leaves started to die. I brought it upstairs to where it is now. I feel like leaves are popping up all over the place, but they look like cork screws coming up. When they unravel, they look inverted. I have a light and moisture sensor. I use artificial light. It's possible it needs repotting, but then I see where it will flower better if it's root bound.

I'm kind of at a loss and appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!image

    Hi Tanya20

If that is your garden visible through the windows , why isn't the plant standing outside for the summer ?

They are of S.African origin , and crave fresh air , sunlight and plenty of rainwater throughout our warmer months .

By all means , bring in for the winter but not in too warm a room . Minimum temp. of  5 to 10 C is ideal , keep damp through the winter but not too wet .

Remember if the plant has got used to being indoors , it will probably scorch if exposed to sunlight immediately ; acclimatise it by beginning in dappled shade and slowly introducing it to brighter conditions . Hope to have helped image

I must have anticipated your suggestion to put it outside because I did pretty much after I submitted my post. And I appreciate the suggestion to get it used to the direct sun. That's the first time anyone has said that! Thank you

  • The first normal looking leaf. There are 2 shoots on either side of the plant. I read where those are to be cut off for the plant to grow normally. Is this really the case?

    Hello again Tanya20

Strelitzias are naturally clump forming ; I would be inclined to leave those side shoots and see what happens . Pleased it's growing OK image
