Bird of paradise

i have a well established bird of paradise and I'm asking for any advice on pruning it to a manageable size i.e. removing the outer leaves ? image

    Hello Neale ,

    Your 'Bird of Paradise' (Strelitzia reginae) is actually New Zealand Flax (Phormium tenax) ; the specific epithet refers to the tenacity of the stems and especially the roots should you decide  to divide it .

    You may be able to sever off some outer stems with a sharp spade , but a large axe might be more usefulimage
