Japanese Anenomes

Advice please.

There are four 'clumps' of Japanese Anenomes in the garden which this year have grown to be HUGE.

They are just coming into flower and are very pretty but because they are overgrowing everything else Id like to divide them. ( new home already found for unwanted pieces )

When is the best time to do this and exactly how is the correct way..ie should I chop them down first or just dig them up and slice with a spade?

    You could let them flower and then divide , or cut off flower stems and foliage now , dig out the pieces you want and replant for next year . They are incredibly tough with strong blackish roots , and they WILL survive this somewhat brutal treatment .image

    I do mine in the Spring. I chop all the old foliage down and then dig up big clumps and divide.

    I like the flowers so wont cut them down. There are lots and lots of Snowdrops where they are and dont want to disturb them in the Spring so probably late Autumn then?
