Which tool to use and am I on the right track ?

Hello all

First time posting. I am currently digging up my garden. It had membrane with a ton of white stones on top of it before.

I am putting down artificial grass.

according to my understanding I need to remove 4 inches of soil and then place 4 inches of type one followed by 2 inches of sharp sand.

Q1. Is the above procedure correct ?

Q2. The ground at the moment is solid clay I have a tool with five long teeth to dig in and loosen the mud. Should I use that to loosen mud and then lift the mud or would I be better digging with a spade. What do you professional people recommend?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you for reading my post.

Sarah.

We aren't professionals.  We're a community of amateur gardeners and plant lovers with varying levels of expertise and experience and between us we can answer most queries - except probably how to lay artificial grass.  We like grass that grows.

I suggest you google for info or ask the supplier or find a DIY forum but you never know, someone here may be able to help.

For loosening clay, prongs are usually better than blades.   Pour some dry sharp sand on the holes and brush it on to keep them open and help maintain drainage.

Thanks for your reply and suggestion.

Thanks for explaining your not a proffessional. It's great for me to get advice from experienced personnel never the less.

As far as growing or fake grass.  We all can appreciate that everyone has their own preference and the reasons behind those preferences.

Just for your information I have already googled and have learnt all I know from research. However I also wanted to seek advice from experienced people as well. You may not have that experience with artificial grass.  I appreciate that but someone else may. So I'll keep my post here And thank you for your kind suggestion.
