Magnolia Grandiflora

Hello all,

I have a Magnolia Grandiflora tree/shrub which has now been in place for approx 7 years, and which looks healthy but has never flowered. It is fairly well sheltered near to a fence and a low wall to protect from hard winds.

Can anyone advise what I should do to promote flowering on what is such a lovely tree.

    Hello russetthouse ; Magnolia grandiflora can be well over ten-years old before any sign of flowering is apparent .

    Late spring frosts can kill any potential flower-buds ; anything below  -5 C can be damaging , though not fatal to the plant .

    Patience and a mild winter. Mine has a load of flowers this year. It went in as a stick 25 years ago. It is now about 30 ft high. Unfortunately the best flowers are at the top but we can see them from an upstairs window.

    Thanks fidgetbones, I thought I had been patient waiting seven years but hopefully time will help then.

    Try feeding it some slow release rose or tomato feed in spring and a couple of drinks of liquid tomato food in late spring and early summer.  This may encourage it to form flower buds.
