Could anyone kindly identify this which is in a friend's garden? I'm thinking 'weed' but it's not one (by some kind of miracle!) that I have ever seen in my own garden.

Oh... I'm clicking the camera icon and selecting the photo from my files but it doesn't seem to be attaching?
try reducing the size of the photo - that usually works.

That's a Persicaria. Probably the weed called Redshank, Persicaria maculosa
