What's up with my Acer?

Hi,

Thought I'd jump straight in with a question!

We have an Acer - no idea which particular type, we were given it after someone's Acer dropped seeds and it came up.

We've had it a couple of years now but it just doesn't seem to be doing anything at all!

I've moved it from a pot, to the ground, then just recently back to a pot.

It's not been in direct sun the whole time, or exposed to excessive winds - despite the blurry picture!

I'm baffled! Any suggestions as to why it's not growing?

Thanks.

Acers can be slow to grow but have you fed it lately?  Watered regularly?  Kept it out of strong winds?

The stem looks very thin - I would pot in a smaller pot, with plenty of drainage and a gritty compost. This may help the roots settle and produce a stronger plant.

Possibly with moving it from pot to ground, then back to a pot, it has been moved too much and stressed. Each time you move a plant it losses it's tiny root system and that needs time to re-establish.

Keep it watered, don't allow the pot to dry out, and in a sheltered spot, from the wind and not in direct sun all day. It is going to take time to grow and become a lovely specimen.

Is it potted in ericacious compost? They do do best in acid soil.

    hey everyone,

thanks so much for all your advice.

the acer has only been moved twice in the two years, but I guess at this size maybe that caused problems, it's never done much tho.

I'm going to try potting it smaller as AuntyTach suggested, giving it some food, change of compost and then seeing how it goes.

I hate to admit defeat, but Doghouse Riley might have a point and I might also grab another Acer and go with that!
