help

we moved what we thought was a dried slug off some wood only to find a big fat green caterpillar inside. We have put it safe . Have we hurt it. It did spit a bit.image

    Your photo  looks like the cocoon of a moth caterpillar ... don't know what type - inside the cocoon it'll form a chrysalis and then pupate and eventually emerge as a fully-fledged adult moth.  Keep it in the same sort of environment as you found it and it should be fine.
