    Thanks Laura Bordeline and Mike. That gives me plenty to think about.

     Occasional flights into reality. B) 
  • Agreed with most suggestions, particularly hardy geraniums and heuceras. 

    Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (can be invasive but doesn't creep into lawns though. Some Potentilla varieties dotted around also offer good cover.

    Saxifraga x urbium can create an almost impenetrable mat but may take some time and the flowers don't last for long.
