How many Pumpkins?
in Fruit & veg
I'm growing pumpkins for the first time. They are to eat, not for size or showing.
How many pumpkins should I allow each plant to keep?
Or will the plants manage happily with several each?

They're in an open sunny site in the allotment. Three plants set in a triangle, about three feet apart.
I suppose if they continue to crop I'd just cut off any later ones to allow earlies to ripen.
I just wondered if there was an optimum number of fruits one plant could sustain.
I don't think you can put a number on it - it depends so much on the variety and the growing conditions. The bigger and the more leafy the plants, and the more sun, water and nutrients they have, the more fruit they will be able to sustain. Unripe fruits will still be edible. I certainly wouldn't want to be removing any fruits at this stage in the season. I'd concentrate on looking after the plants as best you can and let the plants look after the fruit.
