Any plant suggestions...?

Good morning, hope you are enjoying your weekend! Can anyone suggest a plant solution for this odd corner of my garden?

When we moved here it was just piled with rocks and brambles so I've cleared these. There is a large honeysuckle, astrantia and asters growing around it. It is the south/west facing corner of the Garden.

I had wanted an evergreen bushy thing so dug in a load of manure, cut back the honeysuckle to let in light and planted an aucuba at the start of spring, now looking pretty miserable:

Poor thing-is there anything i can do to revive it? Otherwise I think I will move it and replace it with something else-any suggestions?

I'm worried it's a cursed corner and I'll need to get the dowsers in...image

    Acuba is usually pretty bomb-proof.

Did you notice if there was a 'teabag' around the roots before you planted it.

That's a sort of netting that they put around the roots that is supposed to be biodegradable but isn't. This can restrict roots and keep water out.

They won't grow here but that's because it's windy. I can't imagine a sunny south west corner like that would have a problem. B3's tea bag is a good call, equally if there are some more big rocks a little way down and it's got its roots into an air pocket?

I wonder if 'many a true word spoken in jest' might apply - when someone dumped a heap of old rocks there, they may have been covering something worse that has left a very local patch of contaminated soil - oil maybe?

Gardening on the edge of Exmoor, in Devon

  • Yes, I wondered if the rocks were maybe dumped there for a reason... The asters are starting to encroach on it and dandelions are popping up so it must be possible to grow something there...

if it ever stops raining I'll have a dig around, hopefully a teabag situation!

     Thanks

Maybe soil testing would be cheaper in the long run than buying plants that fail.  And spare you some heartache.  Maybe it's the spot for an inanimate feature.  Or a large planter, or a lovely stone trough full of alpines.

  • That's a great idea! Never crossed my mind to do that... had a dig this afternoon and no teabag unfortunately, just a few shallow rootsimage. A big planter or urn would look great, thanks!
