Do you ever see birds pecking at the lawn, particularly corvids like rooks? If so, they could be making the holes while they are after chafer or leatherjacket grubs which may be eating the roots and causing the dead patches. You can get nemasys nematode products which you water on to kill the grubs.
If not birds then a photo of the holes might help.
The holes could be caused by mining bees, but they tend to only appear in one or two places in a lawn (as far as I know). As Bob says, a photo would be a help
Thank you both for your help, I have seen rooks,so i will take your advice.& purchase nematode nematode products, there are many holes in a small area of the lawn.
