Fibre pots - never again

Reading that root vegetables seedlings don't like to be disturbed, and wanting to start them early, I sowed carrots and parsnips in fibre pots and started them off indoors before planting out at the appropriate time.  We got a great crop - the trouble is, these two photos are typical.  The pots were supposed to dissolve in the soil but they stayed intact and the veg did their own thing! image

Think the multi stems could be because of the ground rather than the pots.

I think it gives them character. image My guinea pig would think she had a new friend if I gave her those carrots. image

I don't think it is the ground, which was quite a fine-soil bed, previously used as a bonfire site.  Obviously we worked on the soil (top-soil, compost etc).  After I planted the pots out, I continued the line with seeds and they're all beautifully formed, though not as large as the pot variety.

I tried them on flowers too, ChrissieB and I didn't see too much of a difference between those and the usual seed trays. Like you, I thought they started off better, though.  I've got loads of them left over, so like you, I'll probably use them up and not buy any more.

At the moment I'm experimenting with carrot seed-tapes.  If next door's cat hadn't dug half the line up for a toilet, I think I might have a success story there.
