Viburnum tinus

My friend has a Viburnum tinus which is approx 8/9 ft tall, it has probably 10% or 2 large branches of the shrub with dying leaves, rest of shrub healthy. Any ideas what has caused this and does the offending branches need to be removed to save the shrub.
