Tibetan cherry losing sap

I have noticed that my Tibetan cherry which I planted last year is losing sticky sap from near the base.  The tree is about 3m tall.

I think the reason is because one of my cats has discovered it is good for sharpening his claws.

I have put a rabbit guard around the trunk at the bottom but is there anything I should do or will it heal itself?
