    It should recover.

Water some more and then, before you cut again, make sure the blades are high so you're not cutting it too short while it's still establishing a root system.   Once the grass thickens a bit you can gradually lower the blades but don't go less than 1" high.

Grass needs its leaves to feed its roots and fight off competition from weeds.

Just a thought ... is the lawnmower blade nice and sharp?

The bottom of the grass stems looks yellow because it's been shaded by the top growth.  It will soon green up now it's getting more light.

might I suggest that leaving it 2 months before cutting may have resulted in the grass being a bit on the long side for the mower to cope with?

I always find if the lawn doesnt get a regular cut, when it IS cut it will be yellow underneath, or maybe its just because we havent had much rain?

The mixture of warm and wet weather has meant that the grass has grown faster than normal.  So, although you have done the right thing by allowing it to establish before mowing, it's likely that even at the highest setting the mower has struggled.

The good news is that grass is extremely tough, and it will recover.  Give it a few days to recover and then cut again - at a high setting.  Repeat about once a week if this weather pattern continues, lowering the cut slightly each time.  I wouldn't go down any more than one setting above the minimum.

It sounds like the light levels and drainage may well be causing problems @paulinebirch.
Is it possible for you to post a couple of photos please ?
