strawberry destroyers

i've this year for the first time planted strawberry plants in an old bath in my garden, only to have my growths destroyed by ants. I've tried spraying peppermint oil and even put pots of mint plants around the area but still it does not detter them, has anyone any suggestions to perminantly solve my problem please
