Most clematis will grow well in shade.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

If you want coverage then the climbing hydrangea does well in shade - can't remember the right spelling but its something like hydrangea petioralisimage

Quite a few climbing Honeysuckles can do well in that position. Jasminum Officinale and its varieties also enjoy that aspect.

  • Hello.

As Chicky said, the climber most recommended for shade is (wait for it, it's a mouthful): Hydrangea anomala subsp petiolaris. It can get big though so you'd need to keep on top of the maintenance. Garrya elliptica is another one and has lovely pendant catkins. Again give it a bit of control pruning to keep it tidy.

And it would be worth making sure the trellis is secured well, one of my Clematis armandii made short work of one recently :/
