I think the early warm weather this year has really suited them, Pete. Tina - I have a heated bed now but always used to start them off on the windowsill in small pots covered with an inverted plastic bottle with the top cut off. I have also used those unheated windowsill propagators with the module trays they sell cheaply in Wilkos etc. with excellent results.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
I use a heated propagator in my unheated g/house to start them off. Windowsill should be ok, but as well as some warmth, they need as much light as possible, and March in the UK doesn't get a lot of that
