Linzi64uk, I would class myself a very lazy gardener nowadays. I definitely have not gardened properly for a long while. Judging by the list of things that you intend to do, no thank you! If you want to take cuttings, it shouldn't be a problem. From now to autumn you can cut stems off and push them into some potting compost and keep them watered, they should root eventually.
Try pushing a spade down level with the fence in September, to slice off a lump. Cut the tops down to reduce transplant shock. Dig a hole and plant it. water well and stand well back. they will grow 6 ft and have a 3 ft spread.
Hmmmm!!!! Looks like I'll try with the cuttings for my friend Borderline & Fidgetbones......can I keep it trimmed to keep the size down or will this affect the flowering as it is a lovely flower.
Borderline (oops, I have just realised, it is 3 years since I posted this query. My hubby was a bit over zealous in cutting back the Leycesteria & although there is foliage now, am yet to see any flowers. Can I still cut back this year (a little) & maybe get flowers next year?
Hello Linzi64uk, glad to hear the Himalayan Honeysuckle is still around, they are tough plants in the right location. If he has been cutting back over the last 2 months or so, it's highly likely you may lose flowering on those stems. However, if you are patient, wait another month or so, it may have just delayed the flowering a bit.
If you cut them back now, you should get flowers next year.
Hi Borderline. It was cut back after the growing season when I first posted the query. As I said, I think hubby was over zealous in cutting it back. I will watch it for now and only do a light trim this year
