Potato Seeds?

d.coed.coe Posts: 15

My potato plants have flowered but I have noticed  green tomato like plants on the potato green foliage....what are these please???

Are they seeding? Which means I can grow potatoes with these next year....yes/no?

Is it best to cut these off to or not?

Why do they appear on potato plants??

Anybody, please help with my queries as I'm a beginner and am not sure at all

Thanks a lot

You could sow the seeds but you would probably only get one small potato.  If you kept that, you could plant it the next year and get a few more, keep those and plant them the year after and you would get a crop but it may be nothing like the original potato which produced the seed.  This is how new varieties are bred.

However, for anyone other than a breeder this is just a waste of time and it's best to remove the fruit (which are poisonous) as soon as you see them so the plant can put its energy into producing tubers instead of seed.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
