Moving A Deciduous Fern.

Hi,

I'm about to install a garden pond and water feature but I have several plants that fall within the footprint of the new project. One of these is a deciduous fern about a meter across that we really want to keep.

Other than watering well before / after and making sure the new site has plenty of organic matter, are there any other hints or tips that would help soften the blow to the plant and boost our chances of it surviving please?

Thanks

Martin

Ideally don't move now and delay pond building until autumn.

Otherwise your care tips sound perfect.

    Hi Punkdoc,

Thanks for getting back to me. I know where you're coming from, but sadly my very patient Wife has reached the end of her tether. The pond and water feature have already sat in the garage for over a year, so we're at the "Do something with it or I will" stage. It's my own fault really.

I guess I'll just have to take a chance and see what happens. It'll be great if it survives, but looking on the bright side, it's an excuse to visit some nurseries on a plant finding expedition if not.

    Thanks again.

    Regards

It will probably survive being moved. Might look a bit unhappy until winter but I bet you a fiver it'll come back fine next year.

I am an impatient gardener who often moves plants at the wrong time of the year and have done so with many a fern.  Provided you keep up with the watering it will bounce back.
