Don't know, but the leaves are edible, and I've read that they are more nutritious than the beets!
I have a gardening friend who grows beetroots for exhibition. He suggested I sow Bolthardy (the name of the seed) this year and they have done very well, although not quite up to his award winning standards. I sow my seed in module trays and plant out when the plants are 2 or 3 inches tall.
Could my problem be overcrowded. I sowed the seeds straight outside in a big container. But I never thinned them out.
You've identified the problem. I use the thinnings as salad leaves. Also plenty of watering needed for the roots to swell.
Good luck

Yes I agree with Dovefromabove - I only put 2 seeds in each small module in a black module tray - then when a couple of leaves are an inch or so tall I thin out the weakest before planting out when the module has filled with the beetroot roots. I also feed the seedlings a couple of times whilst watering them. I am harvesting mine now.
Thank you for your help.
