Pentsemon Phoenix Magenta problem

Hello,

I planted the above plant on 25/6 and it's looking like it's going to die. Flowers dead and  the foliage is starting to turn brown.

I have another one, but the Amelia Jane variety, which  is thriving in another part of the garden.

I am thinking of moving the sad one to the same spot?

Any advice on this issue, appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

What aspect is the successful Amelia Jane growing in and what aspect is Phoenix Magenta growing in. Maybe varying sunlight and type of soil could play a part. They want free draining soil but not sandy and dry.

  • One is in a one with limited drainage, the other is drier.

Will move today, thanks for the tip!

  • Good one in a sunny spot, the other only has sun at certain times of the day,

They prefer sun, but some do fine in partial shade. But if Phoenix Magenta is not doing so well in partial shade, it's worth moving. However they are very vulnerable to moves right now, especially if you say the plant is looking ropey. I think you can cut it down a bit if you move it. Then water in well and see. The soil should be free draining but well prepared with lots of good compost.

I am afraid I do not agree regarding sun / shade.

From personal experience Penstemon do very well in partial shade and I have even had some success in quite deep shade.

I think it very unlikely that a lack of sunshine would cause such a problem, in a very short period of time.

How can you lie there and think of England

Punkdoc, perhaps you are right. The other plants, may have been planted a lot earlier, so are possibly more settled in.? Maybe planting out at summer time may have been a factor in the plant looking poorly. You are lucky if you have had success with Penstemon in shade.

  • I planted the other one in April. I moved it as didn't read the post about not moving it until now image.

Well let's see what happens now as it's in its new spot so hope it will do well!

    Thanks all!
