Ivy
I have decided to revamp our front garden after moving in last year. I've managed to dig up all the scrubs and roots. However, I'm after advice on ivy and weeds. I basically want to make sure that all the ivy and weeds are gone before replanting and adding gravel. There are no leafs left showing but I know there are a lot of roots. Can I treat with weed killer? Also, how long would I need to wait before replanting? I've tried digging out the roots but they are everywhere!! Help.

The sort of weedkiller that will kill roots will kill anything you want to plant later as well. You could wait until it regrows and then spray with glyphosate. You may need to do that twice. That may mean leaving replanting until next year. The alternative is a fork and a lot of hard work. Maybe you could find a teenager on long summer hols to do it for a price. I did it with mine. I figured a 17 year old back was better than mine.
If you can bruise and break the foliage a bit, that helps with the uptake of weedkiller too, calee. It can be difficult to get through ivy's waxy coated leaves otherwise.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
You either have to wait a month or so for the roots to sprout again and spray with weedkiller or you start at one corner of the garden and methodically dig over and discard any roots you find. Dig with a fork rather than a spade.
Thank you for the replies. I think I will try and dig the roots out.
