I don't soak my orchids, just water with a can from above as I do with all my other house plants. Far less hassle and so far I have not had any problems. I do spray them once or twice a week, when I remember, more so in the summer when the air is warm and dry.
Well my thoughts are that it allows the bark to hold some water. As I said it seems to work for me. I wonder if the growing conditions I provide would need to change in the summer.
I am sure you are right that the bark will hold some water Iamweedy, and isn't it funny how we all have our own ways of trying to keep our plants happy and healthy. Just by sheer neglect the weeds in our garden seem to thrive whatever the weather throws at them, but our cossetted plants often struggle in the supposedly ideal situation and care!
I dont soak them, plonk them in the bath room by room, pour water through and feed, you cannot mist or spray feed in situ can you, on top of tables cupboards whatever. Oh, Guernsey I know what you mean about the weeds, perhaps we should tending them lovingly!
